Soak the dal for at least 2 hours before cooking
Dice the onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic and jalapeno
Turn the instant pot to medium sauté. Once hot add the cooking oil. Add the cumin and Asafetida Powder. Stir for 30 seconds
Add the onions and sauté for 1 min
Add the ginger, garlic and jalapeno and sauté for 3 mins
Add the remaining spices. Stir for 30 seconds
Add the tomatoes. Sauté for 2 mins
Rinse the dal, add to the instant pot along with 3 cups water
Set the instant pot to 12 min, pressure cook setting
Let the pressure release naturally or instantly. Check the thickness of the dal. You can sauté if you like it a little thicker
Dal is ready to serve
